Reindeer walk. That is the point. The sleigh moves at the pace of an animal with no reason to hurry, and the forest stays quiet enough to hear the runners. Children who found the huskies overwhelming are often the ones who ask to go round again. Rides come in roughly 0.6 kilometre and 1.5 kilometre versions, and the longer one is worth it. Snowmobile safaris sit at the other end of the week, and they carry the strictest rules. Tours generally run from Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park at Levintie 1585 in Kittilä. You need a valid physical class B driving licence that is recognisable in English. A photograph of it is not accepted. Two adults normally share one machine, with single driving available as a supplement. Thermal and safety equipment is included. Northern lights hunting needs an honest frame. Darkness on its own does not produce an aurora. You need geomagnetic activity and a break in the cloud on the same night, which is why we treat a sighting as a bonus rather than the plan. Quieter winter hours that guests rate higher than they expect:
- Forest ice skating on a prepared 1 km route through Lovimainas Forest.
- Ice fishing, which is mostly sitting quietly on a frozen lake and is far better than that sounds.
- Snowshoeing with Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park Levi: 2 hours and 30 minutes, rated moderate, not suitable for children younger than 14. Meet at the Safari Office, Levintie 1585. Book at least two hours ahead. Pickup, a guide, snowshoes, winter clothing and hot drinks are included.

Summer and Autumn in Levi
Summer is the quietest booking season we have. People assume the place shuts when the snow melts. It does not.
In summer the midnight sun keeps the sky light around the clock for weeks, which changes what a day means. You can start a hike after dinner and still be walking in full daylight at midnight. Levi’s own trails run straight from the village. Visit Levi keeps current trail and event listings.
The clock stops organising your day. Nothing has to be finished before dark, because there is no dark. Guests who only know the winter arrive expecting a quieter version of the same place. They find a different one: green fells rather than white ones, water rather than ice, and the same silence with far fewer visitors in it.

Two rules catch families out every year. On snowmobile products, a child over 150 cm travelling as a passenger is charged the full adult price, subject to availability, and children under four cannot take part at all. Check the individual listing before you book rather than at the meeting point.
Slow Days: Sauna, Food and the Village
Do not fill every day. Lapland works on contrast, and the empty afternoons are what make the safaris memorable.
Almost every home we look after has a sauna, and it is the centre of a Finnish evening rather than an extra. Electric saunas heat faster than wood-heated ones. Food is genuinely good here. The Hullu Poro restaurants are the village institution. If you would rather not go out, North Pole Catering will send a private chef to your cabin. Their chefs Arto Rastas and Teemu Korkalainen cook proper Lapland food rather than a tourist version of it. We arrange it as part of a stay.
The village itself takes an afternoon: the shops, the gondola for the view, a coffee somewhere warm. Eight kilometres out at Köngäs, Tonttula, the Elves Village is the Christmas stop that even sceptical adults enjoy. Santa has a log house on the site, the elves run their own workshop, and the Santa’s Visitor Center is open daily and free to walk into. It runs all year rather than only in December.
Leave the first morning free:
Flights land late, children are wired, and everyone is short of sleep. A big activity on the morning after arrival is the mistake we still see most. Go to the supermarket, heat the sauna, walk up the village. Start the programme on day two and the whole week runs better.

Nothing here is far. Kittilä Airport is 15 km away by road according to Finavia, and the activity meeting points are in or beside the village.

How Booking Activities Works

- Book before you arrive for the Christmas, New Year and February periods. The best slots go weeks ahead.
- Lead times apply. Snowmobile products usually need booking at least 12 hours in advance, and the cross-country experience at least 24 hours.
- Arrive 30 minutes before departure at the meeting point. This is the time needed to fit thermal suits and boots.
- Bring your physical driving licence for anything you intend to drive.
- Alcohol is strictly forbidden on tours, without exception.
- On snowmobiles there is a maximum personal self-liability of €950 per person per snowmobile. Additional insurance costs €15 on site and reduces the self-liability to €150. Most guests take it.
